OPERATION BANNER  COMES TO AN END

The British Army’s longest continuous campaign in history came to an end at midnight, 31st July 2007, after thirty-eight years.

During the emergency operation in Northern Ireland the Gloucestershire Regiment undertook seven tours of duty and the RGBW a further two. The story of the Glosters’ tour of 1971-72 can be read on the website’s Timeline.

It was just like the blitz all over again. It was absolutely horrifying, but the people were marvelous – they got rescue operations under way as quickly as they could.
