Creation of The Rifles

As part of the re-organisation of the Army and the Infantry in particular, The Royal Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Light Infantry officially amalgamated with the Devon and Dorset Light Infantry to form 1st Battalion, The Rifles on 1st February, 2007.

They will be permanently based in at Beachley in Gloucestershire and will form part of 3 Commando Brigade, Royal Marines. They will retain their current manpower and equipment and over time will develop the specialist amphibious skills needed to take full part in all types of amphibious operations.

This is the first time for over 50 years that the regular battalion has been based in the County.
