The Gloucesters in India
Compared with many regiments of the British Army, the Gloucesters were relative late-comers to the Indian sub-continent, the 61st South Gloucestershire Regiment being posted to Ceylon in 1828, and the 28th North Gloucestershire Regiment being posted to Bombay in 1842. But if they were tardy in their arrival, it cannot be said that they did not make up for it in their subsequent record, with postings to India being a recurring theme in the annals of the 28th and the 61st. Indeed, the 28th, when 1st Battalion, The Gloucestershire Regiment, was one of the last British units to leave India before independence in 1947.
