Rifle Volunteers Display
Dates: January 21, 2007 - January 1, 2008
This small exhibition highlights the links between the new Rifle Regiment and the Rifle Volunteers that were part of most infantry regiments from the middle of the 19th century. At the turn of the last century most Volunteer Battalions wore the bugle as a cap badge, and the colour green was widely used. One example on display shows that the Front badge, and the Bugle all on the same head dress. Also on display is a fine full dress Volunteer uniform complete with typical frogging and piping often seen on the uniforms of those with Rifles affiliations. There are also presentation rifles from the nineteenth century and a wide variety of badges, images and posters of the period.
National Service Display
Dates: February 1, 2006 - December 1, 2007
National Service was a major part of post war life. In practice most young men on reaching 18 years of age underwent military service for a period of two years. After initial basic training which was usually intense and very active, they were posted to their battalions, who could have been any where in the Empire. National servicemen saw active service in Korea, Malaya, Kenya, Cyprus, and other conflicts. This was mostly part of Britain's withdrawal from Empire and was largely complete by the time National Service ended in 1962. This episode became a formative part of their education and shaped the lives and attitudes of these young men. Many came home well travelled and self reliant. They had made friendships that would last their lifetimes. 'This exhibition brought back for me many fond memories of the ordered life of the 1950s and 1960s.' A.Jones, Forest of Dean.
