| Medals | 1809 - 1814 | Medal: Lieutenant-Colonel James Coghlan led the 61st through numerous battles in 1813-1814, before dying upon the field at Toulouse. Here the Regiment earned a new nickname, ‘The Flowers of Toulouse’ due to the number of red coated dead they left on the field. Lord Wellington remarked in despatches that the 61st were ‘highly distinguished throughout the day’. Coghlan was fatally wounded through the body early in the battle. His body, at first hastily interred on the field after the battle and he was laid to rest in the Protestant church at Toulouse, the funeral being attended by the Duke of Wellington himself. Coghlan’s posthumous Gold Cross was awarded for the battles of Talavera, Nive, Orthes and Toulouse, and also features clasps for the Pyrenees and Nivelle. At first, medals for the Peninsular War were only awarded to officers, the magnificent Army Gold Cross being awarded to field and general officers who had been present at four or more battles. It supplemented the Army Gold Medal, and was approved by the Prince Regent in 1813. |
