Jigsaw Puzzle - "Blue Duke"

The Blue Duke was painted by John Chester Mathews in 1894. Mathews had served in the Middlesex Yeomanry before transferring to the Royal Gloucestershire Hussars in 1893, holding the rank of Major. He was an expert painter and sculptor of horses, exhibiting at the Royal Academy, and several paintings of his are held in the Royal Collection.
The painting shows Henry Charles FitzRoy Somerset, 8th Duke of Beaufort as Honorary Colonel of the Royal Gloucestershire Hussars reviewing the regiment in 1894 at Prestbury near Cheltenham. The Cotswold Hills provide a dramatic backdrop. The regiment is shown in its full-dress finery of Badminton Blue cloth, little altered in style since it was introduced by the Duke’s father when the Regiment was re-styled as the Royal Gloucestershire Hussars in 1847.
His Royal Highness The Duke of Cambridge, Commander-in-Chief of the British Army, also reviewed the Regiment in Cheltenham in 1894, as was reported at the time. “His Royal Highness personally inspected this regiment, and has expressed his approval of all he saw. This may be considered a model Yeomanry corps. It is well drilled, well horsed, and ably commanded, and His Royal Highness is fully satisfied with the report of the inspecting officer.”
