Mons and Le Cateau - CD Campaign Trails No 7

The grim battles of Mons and Le Cateau occured in the very first weeks of The Great War.The burning desire of the French to reclaim Alsace and Lorraine was matched by Germany’s Schlieffen Plan, designed to give them decisive victory. The “Old Contemptibles”,the British Expeditionary Force, stood in the path of the German offensive.
There followed a fascinating campaignof mobility amid controversial issues of generalship and inter-allied co-operation.The BEF suffered heavy casualties and spent much time retreating, but their determined gallantry foiled the German war plan and saved Europe from a lightning defeat.
