Discovering Friendly and Fraternal Societies - Their Badges and Regalia
Paperback,160 pages. Full of glossy photographs, mainly in colour. Curious items such as sashes and collars made of silk or velvet, aprons and medals often decorated with arcane symbols, are often grouped together under the misleading title of ‘masonic’. The author describes the range of nationally organised orders to tiny village saving clubs that were an essential part of life for the majority of people in Britain but, with a few exceptions, have now disappeared. A fascinating book.
