Cheese-Rolling in Gloucestershire

Each year on May Day Bank Holiday Monday, guest ‘rollers’ hurl 7lb Double Gloucester cheeses down the precariously steep Cooper’s Hill near Cranham in Gloucestershire, whilst a bunch of reckless competitors chase after them. This dangerous tradition (even today broken limbs are quite common!) has been practised for centuries dating back as early as the Roman period, and is thought to have perpetuated the ancient grazing rights of the commoners. This facinating book covers every possible aspect of Cooper’s Hill Cheese Rolling traditions both past and present, and is richly illustrated with over 200 images.
